Mentre Giuseppe Palmas fotografava Sophia Loren, Federico Fellini, Gina Lollobrigida e le altre celebrità a Roma negli anni ‘50, probabilmente non sapeva che stava documentando la storia della “Dolce Vita”. E quando scattava foto al senzatetto sulla strada stava inconsapevolmente anticipando quello che il Cinema Italiano avrebbe successivamente chiamato “Neorealismo”.
Dolce Vita e Neorealismo, due facce della stessa medaglia: l’Italia, una nazione che stava ancora leccandosi le ferite lasciate aperte dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Una generazione determinata a ricostruire, ma ancora immersa nella povertà, desiderosa di svago eppur sofferente, che sperava di commentare fatti di cronaca rosa, ma che avrebbe dovuto vivere ancora tanti episodi di cronaca nera.
Questa mostra vuole documentare la capacità del fotoreporter Giuseppe Palmas di portare Dolce Vita e Neorealismo sullo stesso livello, di entrare come ospite d’onore nella casa della diva del momento e nella baracca del barbone, con lo stesso rispetto e lo stesso stile. While Giuseppe Palmas was photographing Sophia Loren, Federico Fellini, Gina Lollobrigida and the other celebrities in Rome in the ‘50s, he didn’t know he was telling the story of “La Dolce Vita”. And when he photographed the man on the street, he was unknowingly depicting the genre that Italian cinema would later call “Neorealism”.
Dolce Vita and Neorealism, two faces of the same coin: Italy, a nation intent on licking its wounds left by World War II. A generation determined to rebuild, but burdened by poverty and homelessness, longing to have fun but enduring great suffering, seeking romance but encumbered by crime.
This exhibition documents photojournalist Giuseppe Palmas’ capacity to bring La Dolce Vita and Neorealism down to the same level; to enter with the same respect and style as the guest of honor in a celebrity’s house just as in a tramp’s shack. In black and white, of course. Click.
